The federal government will maximise the Songhai integrated farms initiatives in basin development authorities in the country to create wealth, the Minister of State, Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Mohammed Goronyo, has said.
Speaking in Calabar during his familiarity tour of facilities at the headquarters of the Cross River Basin Development Authority, the minister said different components of the basin development authority’s Songhai integrated farm model were helping in stemming the tide of employment in line with the Renewed Hope and wealth creation agenda of the federal government.
The minister, who formally commissioned the Songhai Integrated Model Farm, noted: “This initiative is in line with the federal government’s renewed hope agenda. We will maximise this initiative in the 12 Basin Development Authorities to lift our people out of poverty.
“As a government, we have already hit the ground running and we are out of our comfort zones to collaborate with critical stakeholders, the private sector, traditional institutions and the management of the Twelve River Basin Authority to reposition the sector.”
Goronyo, who disclosed that Jigawa remained the only State free of open defecation, said the federal government was also mulling building more toilets in schools, hospitals and other public institutions and places.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the Basin Authority, Engr Bassey Nkposong said the Basin Authority was doing everything possible to ensure it meets the reasons it was established.
He however sought the intervention of the federal government in tackling pressing challenges to enable the Authority to deliver service to its catchment areas which include Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
