"I, promise to join the vanguard of agitations for Local Government Autonomy using the instrumentality of the legislative powers of the National Assembly to carry the burdens off the rural dwellers' necks and make them live good and befitting lives."
Comrade Marcelo Nwaji Anyigor pledged this during the weekend while interacting with journalists in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
Anyigor, the Ebonyi South Senatorial Aspirant under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Marcelo Nwaji Anyigor vowed to be among active proponents for full local government autonomy if he emerges victorious at the polls.
The Senatorial hopeful noted the importance of grassroots leadership and upheld that granting full financial autonomy to the local government would give rise to democratic succours to the hinterlands and widespread development across the country.
He observed that, making the local governments subservient to the states of the federation had been the identifiable reason why poverty was well entrenched at the grassroots.
Contending further, Anyiogor said, "I believe that making the third tier of government, which is the closest to the grassroots, to enjoy financial independence will banish the poverty ravaging the land."
He maintained that granting local government financial autonomy would also combat corruption being perpetrated via the diversion of funds meant for rural dwellers and the debasement and undue manipulation of the political structure through the constitution of caretaker committees by governors instead of putting elected officials in place in their various states.
