This week’s edition of the Legislative Diary of the Senate Deputy Chief Whip and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District- Distinguished Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi encapsulates his passionate commitment to effective representation and his firebrand irrepressible voice to national issues which has helped to shape public opinion and redirected Government’s policies and programmes.
Precisely on May 2, 2024, Senator Nwebonyi felicitated the Nigerian workers on the successful celebration of their Worker’s Day on May 1, 2024, describing them as the pillars of our dear country, Nigeria. He assured of making legislation that will better the lots of Nigerian workers while commending Governor Nwifuru’s giant strides in improving the welfare of Ebonyi workers.
In another development, Senator Nwebonyi extolled the sterling virtues of Ebonyi First Lady- Her Excellency, Chief Mrs Mary-maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru for her compassion and humanitarian services through her pet project: BERWO. The Senate Principal officer made the commendation at Ugbodo on May 4, 2024, during the working visit of the First Lady to Ebonyi local government area where she inaugurated the BERWO in the council and also commissioned some completed projects.
Subsequently, Senator Nwebonyi graced the gala night in honour of the Senate President held at the Executive Chambers, Government House, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state on Friday, May 3, 2024. The gala night was organized by the Akwaibom State Government as a prelude to the grand civic reception and the homecoming of Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio organized by the good people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, Akwaibom State on Saturday, May 4, 2024. The Senate Deputy Chief Whip- Nwebonyi was actively involved in the two grand occasions and seized the opportunity to eulogize Senator Akpabio ‘s excellent track record describing him as a national asset.
Moreover, the member of ECOWAS Parliament granted an interview with AIT shortly after the plenary session on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, where he gave his support for the proposed State Police in as much as there’s a legal framework to checkmate its excesses. Senator Nwebonyi argued that the exacerbating security challenges in the country seem to have overwhelmed the Federal Police hence the need for the State Police to complement their efforts.
While lending his voice to a motion about the debate on the Rights and Privileges of People with Disabilities Act, Senator Nwebonyi called for the full implementation of the act adding that the physically challenged are also part of God’s creation and therefore deserve to be accommodated in the scheme of things. He submitted while seconding the motion moved by Senator Osita Izunaso during plenary on Thursday 9, May 2024.
On the State of the Nation and burning national issues, Senator Nwebonyi appeared on TVC and AIT programmes respectively on Thursday 9th May 2024 to bare his personal opinions and clarify grown areas in some recent legislations. Against the backdrop of the recent recommendation of capital punishment for drug traffickers, Senator Nwebonyi threw his support for the bill adding that it will reduce the flatulent spate of crime in the country. The courageous federal legislator equally revealed that he is already working on a bill to make corruption a capital offence in Nigeria.
Finally, Senator Nwebonyi joined the President of the Senate- Senator Godswill Akpabio to commission a Lithium production company in Nasarawa state on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 10, 2024. Senator Nwebonyi appreciated the enduring synergy between the federal, and state governments and the private Chinese investor- Avatar New Energy Materials company which gave birth to the project noting that it will create multiple economic benefits for Nigeria.
