The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC on Friday inducted 1,375 Corps members of the 2024 Batch 'B' Stream 'II' at the scheme's permanent orientation camp, old Macgregor College, Afikpo local government area of Ebonyi State.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Oladeinde Foluke, in her address during the induction ceremony, disclosed that 671 of the new Corps members are males while 704 of them are females.
According to her, the young Nigerians arrived at the shores of Ebonyi in response to the call of service to the fatherland; they went through the registration process and at the end of the exercise, a total of 1,375 were registered, made up of 671 males and 704 females.
Mrs Oladeinde said the service had been carefully planned and segmented into four cardinal programmes, including orientation, primary assignment, community development services, CDS and the winding up.
She further noted that the three-week-long orientation course exercise, fully regimented, serves as the first programme of the NYSC, and was packaged to instill in the corps members a disciplined mind, a sense of reliance and above all, to equip them with practical, social and leadership skills which would enable them to conquer the challenges of the service year and beyond.
The NYSC Coordinator, therefore, urged the Corps members to take every aspect of the orientation course very seriously, especially the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED programme, to acquire a skill before the end of their service year.
Oladeinde warned that "no act of indiscipline of any sort will be tolerated" in the camp, as she commended the state governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru, for having been committed to taking care of the corps members' welfare since their arrival.
Governor Nwifuru, represented by the State Commissioner for Sports and Youths Development, Prince Richard Idike, described the oath of allegiance taken by the Corps members as a call for their action towards nation-building, especially now Nigeria faces daunting challenges.
Nwifuru charged the Corps members to participate actively in the camp activities with the hope of contributing their best towards national integration and development.
The Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Elvis Ngele, represented by Justice Emmanuel Ogbunefi, administered the oath of allegiance to the corps members and the Chairman, Ebonyi State Secondary Education Board, Mrs Lilian Nwankwo, represented by Member ‘1’, Chief Lazarus Eze advised the Corps members to be of good behaviour throughout their service year.
