The lawmaker representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Ken Eze, said over 10,000 of his constituents were budgeted to benefit from his 250 million Naira free medical outreach held at Onueke Township Stadium, Ezza South local government area of Ebonyi State.
Eze who is also the Senate House Committee on Information and National Orientation, said the beneficiaries of the medical outreach flagged off on Friday, were expected to be residents of the four local government areas including Ikwo, Ezza South, Ezza North and Ishielu which make up the Ebonyi Central Senatorial District.
He disclosed that the free medical screening and treatments included screening for cervical and prostate cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, hernia and hydrocele surgery, hepatitis, eye disease and provision of eyeglasses to the patients, ulcers, malaria and typhoid fever, children medical checkups, provision of mobility aids to the needy and free dispensing of drugs, among others.
The Senator noted that over 100 health workers were deployed for the medical outreach to ensure the people, whom he said, lacked money to access quality health services, received necessary treatment after proper medical screening and tests.
According to him, about 30 of the 100 health workers are qualified medical doctors in various fields including the consultants, who were deployed to ensure the people are well screened and treated for all kinds of ailments, saying the medical outreach would be continuous in the constituency.
He said, "We have budgeted for over 10,000 people across the four local government areas in Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone, to be treated for all kinds of ailments."
"This health outreach is continuous because we are going to pump more funds as we run down this 250 million Naira we budgeted for the program.
"Before now we have run a foundation that helps indigent people, so, one of my primary assignments is to help people to survive, as many as that attend the outreach will access our services.
"Those we have attended to, some have been referred to the teaching hospitals for treatment and some are already undergoing major surgery. We have to make this outreach open and continuous because even if we stop the outreach, some people will still be coming to my home for medical assistance," Eze said.
The Senator disclosed his plan to enrol his constituents into the health insurance scheme that would be held the following day, noting once any of them was given a health insurance card, he/she could access medical services in any hospital under the scheme.
"We are equally lodging our health insurance scheme which will be done tomorrow. The team were here and we have mapped out a particular fund for the scheme so that once you are given the card you can use it to access health services in any hospital you present the card that's under the scheme, you will be treated without any Kobo," the Federal lawmaker added.
Some of the beneficiaries including Ukpai Joseph, Nwafor Nneka, Ali Veronica, and Odom Cornelius, among others, thanked Senator Eze and described his medical outreach as a divine project in the Senatorial zone.
