Ebonyi has ranked first in the establishment of the State Assembly Service Commission among its counterparts in the Southeastern geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
The Commissioners of the National Assembly Service Commission disclosed this when visited the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Service Commission.
The former lawmaker representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District and member of the National Assembly Service Commission, Senator Julius Ali Ucha who led his colleagues in the commission from South East extraction
commended both Ebonyi and Imo State Governors for being the only two states in the Southeast that have fulfilled this obligation.
The visit, according to Ucha, was in the fulfilment of one of the responsibilities of the National Assembly Service Commission.
Ucha, the leader of the delegation, extolled Governor Francis Nwifuru for his foresightedness in appointing former parliamentarian the chairman of the State House of Assembly service commission, which he said has repositioned the commission within a short time in office.
He enumerated other activities of the National Assembly Service Commission including ensuring the development of a crop of excellent manpower resources that are competent and knowledgeable to provide support and expertise to the legislators to meet the challenges of good legislation for democratic governance and sustainable development.
Senator Ucha, while commending the state Governor Nwifuru for the giant strides in the infrastructural development, assured that the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Service Commission would be one of the first tranchess to benefit from the foremost line charges to make the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to be fully autonomous.
Another Commissioner who was a former Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Amaechi Nwoha, in his presentation, lamented that the remaining states in the Southeast zone have begun to miss out on the benefits of having a state Assembly Service Commission.
He noted that the quarterly meeting was imperative as it would let them know what is on the ground in states, adding that it is also necessary for the service commission to have informed staff.
Responding, the Chairman of Ebonyi State House of Assembly Service Commission and a former member of the House of Representatives, Francis Elem, commended the coming of the delegates from the National Assembly Service Commission, especially Senator Julius Ali Ucha, whom he described as a friend and diligent fellow.
He recalled that the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Service Commission was established in 2016, and he came on board in January 2024. since then, the improvement of the staff performance, renovation of the commission's building and the general welfare of the staff in the House of Assembly have been the priorities of the Commission.
He commended the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses lje Odunwa for all the support and approvals made to the Commission, which led to the provision of the office accommodation of all the members of the Commission.
Elem, however, requested the National Assembly Service Commission to expedite action in making the state Houses of Assembly fully autonomous, as some of the departments of the Commission are still attached to state Ministries.
In a vote of thanks, the Clerk of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mrs Uche Edene, thanked the delegates from the National Assembly Service Commission, adding that the visit was the first time in their tenure and that they have learnt a lot from it.
