Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, Hon. Barr Sunday Nwankwo has emphasized the need for teamwork, unity and patriotic spirit among Councilors of the twenty Wards in the Council. He stated this at the inauguration of the Local Government Legislative Council, held on 6th September 2024 at the Council Headquarters, Onuebeonyi Echara.
Barr Nwankwo who congratulated the Councilors on their successful oath of office and peaceful election of their principal officers, promised to sponsor a two-day legislative training to acquaint the Councilors with all they need to function effectively as lawmakers at the council level and representative of their various Wards. He warned against building factions among the Councilors and stressed the need for a cordial relationship between the Executive and the Legislative Arm in stepping down Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s people’s charter of need policies to communities and villages in Ikwo LGA.
Earlier, the Clerk of Ikwo Legislative Council, Mr. Philip Uguru, administered the oath of office and oath of allegiance to the twenty Ward Councilors in Ikwo Local Government Area. This was followed by the election of principal officers of the Council. Hon. Mrs Janet Nwe,ke representing Amainyima Wa, rd was elected as the leader of the Council; Hon. Ozor Uchenna Luga, rd representing Ekpelu Wa, rd was elected the Deputy lead, er and Elder Hon. David Oga, le representing Enyibichiri Wa, rd was elected the Majority leader of the Council.
Other elected principal officers include Hon. Marcelinus, Umunna representing Igbudu Ward 2 as Deputy Majority leader, Hon. Gilbert, Ochere representing Ndiagu Amagu Ward 1 as Chi; ef Whip and Hon. Ifeanyi, I Nomeh representing Ndaigu Echara, Ward 2 as the Deputy Chief Whip.
In her acceptance speech, the new leader of the Council, Hon. Mrs Janet Nweke, thanked her colleagues for the trust reposed in her and assured them and the Council boss that she would not let them down. She called for the corporation of all Councilors to work as partners in progress. The first female leader of the Council assured that with the support of other Honorable Councilors, she and other principal officers will run an all-inclusive administration in the interest of all the Councilors and the entire people of Ikwo Noyo Clan.
Speaking to journalists at the end of the inauguration, the immediate past leader of the Council, Elder Hon. Stephen Nwukwu, thanked his former colleagues for the support they gave to him while he served as the leader of the Legislative Council. He congratulated the Councilors, especially the new principal officers and wished them well in their tenure.
Others, including former Coordinators of Ikwo East Development Center, Hon. Emmanuel Ekuma and Hon. Dickland Ovunna, described the peaceful election and transition of power as commendable. They advised the Councilors to work closely with the Council Chairman to deliver on their campaign promises, adding that the unity and peace seen among the Councilors indicates their readiness to queue behind the legacy administration policy of the Council Chairman, Hon. Barr. Sunday Nwankwo.
Present at the event were the APC Chairman in Ikwo LGAMrr. Sunday Onuzuand, some present and former public office holders, including Hon. Abel Chukwu, Hon. Ndidi Amaiara Odoh, Hon. Kelvin Udenyi, Hon. Esor Udeogu, Hon. Clinton Iteshi among others.
