A nongovernmental organization, Adorable Foundation International (AFI), has raised concern over the congestion of babies in motherless babies' homes in Ebonyi State.
The Southeast Coordinator of Adorable Foundation International, Mayor Chigozie Nwizu-Attueyi (Duke), expressed shock when the team visited the Red Cross Society Ebonyi State headquarters Motherless Babies Home, Nsugbe Street Abakaliki.
He explained that the condition of the home where some of the babies were seen lying on the floor was worrisome and appealed to good-spirited Nigerians to come to their aid.
He described the visitation of the home as a way to contribute their quota in cushioning the economic hardship faced by the people, including the motherless children.
"A lot of things are happening in the country, especially with the current harsh economic situation. Many homes are going through a lot, and doing a little widows might help the home. We came from Anambra to support the Ebonyi State Chapter of our foundation to donate these items to the home.
"Now that we just got wind of this place and the challenges facing them, we shall come back again by the end of next month to still do more and to visit other places.
"When you come in here and see the situation of these children, you will be forced to be worried, and so, the government must come in here and do something about the situation of these children," Chief Mayor stated.
He urged the Ebonyi State government and other good-spirited individuals to support the orphanage home to build a befitting place for orphans and motherless children.
"The government should do more to assist these people, give them better accommodations and more equipment that will help them raise these children.
"Politicians should stop equipping our youths with arms and drugs in the name of politics. They should rather empower them through skills and employment so that they will be reasonable members of society.
"People who have money should also come to assist these people because the best thing you can do with money is to help children like this." he appealed.
The Ebonyi State Coordinator of the foundation, Chinaza Chinedu appreciated the regional Coordinator for his kind heart and enjoined workers in the home to make judicious use of the items donated to them. She explained that the organization has been active in sensitizing youths and the public to the dangers of drug abuse, adding that they also redirect by way of rehabilitation those who are found to be addicted to drugs.
On her part, one of the caregivers, Mrs Gloria Nwokwu, said the home lacked milk, grain, and other important items. She thanked Adorable Foundation International for their visit and called on the government to assist the home to complete a new structure they have started to accommodate more of the children.
Items donated by the foundation included a carton of tummy-tummy instant noodles, pampers, tea, milk tissue, cartons of happy hour, some pieces of bathing soap, detergents, cash gifts, and others.
