Not less than 110 Ebonyi rural traders have benefitted from the N5,500,000 empowerment fund donated to them by the Renewed Hope Initiative of the Nigerian President's wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Senator Tinubu donated the empowerment fund in collaboration with the Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced People Foundation, founded by the wife of Ebonyi State governor, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru.
Mrs Nwifuru, who is the State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative and founder of Better Health for Rural Women Children and Internally Displaced People Foundation, donated the fund on behalf of the wife of Mr President to Ebonyi rural traders yesterday in Abakaliki.
According to her, each of the 110 Ebonyi rural traders would smile home with N50,000, a bundle of wrappers, cartons of bags bag and educational materials for students.
Nwifuru advised the beneficiaries selected from the 13 local government areas of the state to reduce the cost of their commodities in the market to make life bearable for people, thereby achieving the aim of boosting the businesses of rural women.
The Ebonyi first lady also applauded the efforts of her husband, Gov Francis Nwifuru and the first lady of the country, Mrs Tinubu, for their deep commitments to equip women in the state, advance gender equality and make meaningful contributions to society.
"Women traders contribute to economic growth. The programme is designed to equip them with tools and resources needed to strive and advance in business," Nwifuru said.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof Paul Nwobashi, who received educational materials on behalf of students in the state, appreciated Mrs Nwifuru and promised to share the writing materials judiciously with students.
Mrs Chioma Okenmiri, a beneficiary, thanked the First Lady, Mrs Tinubu and Mrs Nwifuru for giving women hope, especially during the economic hardship.
