Nigerian Legion Council has urged President Bola Tinubu-led government to improve on the welfare of its members, wives and children of the fallen heroes in the country.
These include the employment and empowerment for their children, and the active retirees.
The Chairman of Nigerian Legion Council in Ebonyi State, HRH Eze Fidelis Ogodo made the recommendation on Wednesday during the Grand Finale of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at Cenotaph Unity Square Abakaliki.
Ogodo further urged President Tinubu to invest hugely in farming and other agricultural activities, adding that the empowerment of the less privileged individuals should be amomg his administration's top priorities to tackle hardship in the country this year.
The Chairman commended President Tinubu's government for the regular payment of the monthly pensions for the legion and however, called for the prompt provision of the federal government proposed palliatives and other welfare packages for his members.
"But we are still expecting one or two palliatives and rest of other incentives standing as our welfare packages from the federal government.
"The Nigerian Legion Pension Board is doing its best to ensure the regular payment of our monthly pensions and other arears.
"If there's any other outstanding payments, our brothers who are at Abuja will go back to tackle these, because the legion board is doing its best to clear all the necessary backlogs of arrears and pensions
"I have said it time without number that we have many sons and daughters who are already graduates, and the government can employ them.
"Some of us who are retirees are still active, we can be engaged by government by providing us with jobs, the government can empower our wives, to go into agriculture and it's not must we are going to carry file. We want to be at least independently happy to avoid going back home and die because of hunger.
"So, we appealing to the federal government to empower us to go into agriculture and we are expecting the palliatives, the government promised for us, as soon as possible," Ogodo stated.
Speaking on behalf of the wives of the fallen heroes, Mrs Bethel Amauche Ekuma, wife of late CPL Macimillian Ekuma-Awoh from Ezza South local government area of Ebonyi State, appreciated the government authorities, military men and other people of goodwill for coming out enmass to demonstrate their love for the fallen heroes who paid a supreme sacrifice to the nation during their active service.
Mr Ekuma disclosed that majority of the wives of the fallen heroes have been struggling to survive, especially now the nation faces socio-economic woes.
"Some of us who are the wives of the fallen heroes are struggling to survive, many of us are being neglected, and facing many challenges because of the death of our husbands.
"Like me, am a mother of three children, just five years now, things were not too easy again. We are calling government to do all it can to assist us," she said.
Commander Nkwegu Military Cantonment Abakaliki, Lt Col. Audu Bako, while emphasizing the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, said, the event would avail both the government authorities and serving personnel to get in touch with their families of the deceased colleagues to address their plights.
The Commander also advised the serving military personnel to be always embrace professional spirit while discharging their duties in any part of the country.
In his remarks, after laying of wreaths on the tombs of the fallen heroes, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State assured that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of the residents of the state, saying, his government remains indebted to the fallen heroes and their family members.
"We are indebted to you and your family members and as a government, we will do all best to cater for your welfare in our dear state," Nwifuru hinted.
