Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Ebonyi State Council has urged the state lawmakers to wade into the skyrocketing house rent in the state.
The union made the call yesterday during its congress at Dr Sam Egwu Press Abakaliki, the state capital.
In a communique signed by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor and the Union's Secretary, Comrade Nnamdi Akpa, "the Congress frowned at the alarming rate of increment of house rent in the State."
"The congress, however, urges the Ebonyi State House Assembly to immediately wade into the skyrocketing house rent in the State by way of promulgating a law to regulate the activities of shylock landlords and house agents to ameliorate the sufferings of Ebonyi residents."
The body also noted with concern the attitude of some local contractors handling various contracts for Ebonyi State government and, therefore, called on Governor Francis Nwifuru, to consider the capability and integrity of contractors the state government awarded contracts to, henceforth.
NUJ also charged the contractors to adhere strictly to specifications and contract terms to deliver at record time.
It equally observed that many Ebonyi residents are not enjoying pipe-borne water despite the state government's efforts to ensure that her citizens enjoy basic amenities and appealed to the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Water Resources to respond quickly to the plights of the people by tracing broken pipes and fix them to ensure effective water supply and reticulation.
The union announced preparations for her forthcoming State Triennial Delegate Conference that would usher in a new State Working Committee (SWC) in view of the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent leadership on 22 April 2025 and consequently constituted a credential Screening Committee to superintendent the conduct of the election. "The committee include; Tony Ukwome-Chairman, Nwite Moses-Secretary and Opara Emeka-Member," the union stated.
