Urban Unity Cup is the latest football competition introduced for residents of Abakaliki the capital of Ebonyi State to further promote sporting activities especially football in the area by the member representing Abakaliki North Constituency in Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Dr Victor Chidi Nwoke.
Nwoke who is the Chairman House Committee on Sports Development said he is sponsoring the tournament to thank the people of the constituency for their massive support for his emergence as their representative during the 2023 keenly contested general elections as well as to enhance good relationships and spirit of sportsmanship among the urban dwellers.
Details of the draws showed that Group A has Motorcycle Site FC, Timber FC, Hospital Community FC, Lot 3 FC and Scrab Dealers FC.
Group B includes Building Materials FC, Tillers Dealers Association FC, AEFUTHA FC, Quarry FC and NATA FC.
While Group C has Motor Spare Parts FC, Aluminum Village FC, Nwafia Uzor FC and Lot 4 FC.
Addressing newsmen after the draws, the Central Organizing Committee Chairman, Pius Nwankwo declared that the fourteen teams that registered for the tournament were separated into three groups.
Group A to Group C while Group A and C have five teams each with three to qualify for the quarter-finals while Group C has four teams with two to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Nwankwo who is the Special Assistant to the Governor of Ebonyi State on Sports Development and an ex-Gambia International said the tournament will witness high-level professionalism in all areas including professional referees officiating the matches to ensure high-level standards.
The Special Assistant to the Governor who said the kick-off ceremony will be this weekend charged all the participating teams to involve their players in high-level pre-tournament preparations for a good outing and exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship during the tournament.
The Local Organizing Committee Chairman on his part, Nwabueze Awoke said arrangements are on top gear to ensure a very successful tournament.
Awoke who is also the Chairman of Motorcycle Parts Dealers and Allied Workers in Ebonyi State called on all the participating teams to turn out enmass with their jersey kits for match passes at the opening ceremony this weekend.
The donor of the trophy also provided brands of Jerseys to all the competing teams.
